Why are GRP Industries enclosures more resistant to damage and more durable than Sheet Moulding Compound (SMC) enclosures?
Advanced composite materials are appealing in many high-performance applications because of their numerous benefits. High-performance composites are made of layers of matched fibers that are layered over a matrix material to give them superior structural qualities. However, this layering process makes high-performance composites difficult to manufacture. At GRP Industries, we use contact moulding, injection moulding, and vacuum infusion as our manufacturing techniques. These procedures entail manually applying distinct reinforcing "plies" or layers.
This is made up of tens of thousands of glass fibers that have been resin-impregnated, bundled into rows, and then either organized into a single unidirectional ply or in a bidirectional pattern. The hand shaping of each ply into the desired shape is done during the layup process, after which the ply is bonded to the surface of the layer below it or the surface of the mould, leaving no air pockets.

These procedures have very low start-up costs, the ability to create intricate features with excellent structural integrity, and a high degree of adaptability to new components and design modifications.
Similar to other manual processes, enclosures have the possibility of minor human variation-related inconsistencies between parts; nonetheless, these minor differences have no effect on the usefulness of this product line in industrial applications. Due to the quality and versatility of these human-skilled procedures, they have continued to be widely used in the composites industry and are the primary manufacturing approach at the facilities of GRP Industries.

We examined the weather resilience and durability of SMC enclosures built outdoors in the UAE as part of our routine product testing process. These investigations showed that SMC enclosures start to degrade after six to twelve months, at which point the impregnated glass fibers on the external surface become visible. This is due to the Middle Eastern region's typical sandblasting effect and extremely high temperatures, which can reach 50 oC. When exposed to the environment, the rate of deterioration accelerates, severely reducing product life and impairing the enclosure's ability to protect.
SMC enclosures exhibit an increased rate of deterioration that is not experienced by enclosures made using contact moulding, injection moulding, or vacuum infusion. This is as a result of the Gelcoat protection layer that is found on the exterior of GRP Industries' enclosures. In contrast to protective coatings, gelcoat is bonded as a layer with the other reinforcement plies during the production process rather than being applied directly to the products.
