Medical Volunteering in South Africa is open to medical and nursing students at all levels (enrolled in medical school or university) as well as pre-med students (planning to begin medical school) and provides a comprehensive overview of the South African medical system as well as numerous learning opportunities. From Year 1 students with an interest (but no experience) in the field to competent 5th year students opting for advanced specialties, we have all the essentials covered. You will be volunteering in one of the Western Cape's largest community health clinics. It contains a Maternity Obstetrics Unit and a 24-hour Emergency Center (MOU). It serves around 500 patients every day in outpatient clinics and has a vast catchment area that stretches into the far south. The Hypertension Clinic, HIV&AIDS Centre Paediatric Clinics, and School Health are just a few examples. At the facility, students can see a variety of doctors and qualified nurse practitioners.
You will be based in beautiful Cape Town for this medical placement.
Retreat Community Health Centre (RTCHC) is one of the major community health clinics in the Western Cape. It contains a Maternity Obstetrics Unit and a 24-hour Emergency Center (MOU). Retreat has a wide catchment area that goes all the way to the bottom of the state.
The outpatient clinics of RTCHC treat about 500 patients per day. This includes hypertension clinics, X-rays, HIV&AIDS clinics, TB clinics, pediatric clinics, psychiatry, social workers, school health, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy, among other services.
At the institution, students can see a number of doctors and licensed Nurse Practitioners. They can also be rotated between departments, clinics, medical professionals, the Trauma Ward, Dressing Room, Triage Room, and other areas.
The following are some of the medical tasks you will be performing:
In a community health facility, an observation was made. Working with medical doctors, nursing sisters, and other professionals.
Observe what they're doing in their consulting room.
Assisting in the Triage Room by checking patients' vital signs and referring them to doctors based on the severity of their illness or injuries.
Assisting with chores assigned by the senior in charge / doctor in the Trauma Room.
Observing and assisting with the administration of tests in the HIV & AIDS department.
Observing in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Unit.
Assisting in the education of parents and patients in clinics Working in a pharmacy as a pharmacist's assistant
